Measuring guide: the neck size before choosing
Measure the neck with a soft tape, without pulling, where the collar will sit. Keep two fingers of room once the collar is closed. Then compare the value with the sizes listed on each product page: they vary from one model to another.
How to measure your dog’s neck
Lay the tape flat, where the collar will rest, without stretching it. If the value falls between two sizes, check the adjustment range on the product page before deciding.
Adjusting to body shape (narrow head, growing puppy)
A narrow-headed dog, such as a sighthound, can slip out of a classic collar. The Wippet, designed for Whippets and Afghan Hounds, is made for it. For a puppy, measure again regularly while it grows. Product pages give no set rule: today’s measurement remains the only reference.
Three paths: choosing a collar, a lead, a tag
The collar is chosen by neck size first, the lead by use, the tag or nameplate by the engraved text. The table sums up what to check before buying.
| Family | Best use | Check before buying | Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personalised leather collars | Daily walks and identification: a dog collar with an engraved nameplate or tag, depending on the model. | The measured neck size, the size range on the product page and the engraving support offered. | Wippet collar Basel collar Holly collar |
| Leather leads | Walks, training or a smart outing depending on the model, in leather or fluorescent synthetic. | The length stated on the product page and the intended use. Leads are not engraved. | Training lead Holly lead Bio Fluo lead |
| Engraved tags and nameplates | Identifying the dog: a tag hanging from the collar ring, or a nameplate riveted onto the collar. | The text on two lines of 25 characters, the shape and the fixing method. | Round tag Heart tag Collar nameplate |
Choosing a personalised leather collar
Every Smart Wag collar is made from cowhide leather. The Basel is the only braided leather collar; the other models use smooth leather. The Holly pairs that smooth leather with brass hardware. The Wippet, a sighthound collar, has a padded, leather-lined inside; its cut suits Whippets and Afghan Hounds. Neck sizes run from 35 to 70 cm depending on the model.
Engraving is free on every personalisable collar whose product page says so. You choose a nameplate or a tag, then the text, directly on the product page. Find every model and its sizes in the leather dog collar category.
Choosing a leather lead
For walks, the Holly lead in round leather suits daily outings. For training, the training lead offers three rings and two snap hooks to vary its length. For a smart outing, the Cling and Doggy leads add a silver-coloured motif or brass dog motifs. No lead is engraved. Compare lengths on the leather dog lead page.
Engraved tag and nameplate: identifying your dog
The tag comes in three shapes: round, heart and bone. Each is sold with a split ring to hang it from the collar. The personalisable collar nameplate is riveted onto the collar and does not dangle. In both cases, the text fits on two lines of 25 characters. Exact limits and fixing are detailed in the tags and nameplates category.
Free engraving: what can be personalised in the dog range
On personalisable collars, engraving is free when the product page says so. It goes on a nameplate or a tag, depending on the model. Tags and the collar nameplate take two lines of 25 characters. Leads, however, are not engraved.
To check accepted characters, fonts and rendering, read the leather engraving guide.
Frequently asked questions about the dog range
How do I measure my dog’s neck for a collar?
Measure with a soft tape laid flat around the neck, where the collar will sit, without pulling. Keep two fingers of room with the collar closed. Then compare the measurement with the sizes listed on each product page before choosing a model.
Collar or harness: which one should I choose for my dog?
It depends on the dog and the use. A collar suits identification and classic walks. A harness spreads pressure over the chest for a dog that pulls or has a delicate neck. Smart Wag offers personalised leather collars, not harnesses.
